We acknowledge and respect the Algonquin Anishinaabeg people within whose unceded, unsurrendered territory MacOdrum Library is located. This acknowledgment is important to us. We would like to thankfully acknowledge the Algonquin people and recognize that this statement is but one commitment we can make, these words alone are not enough. It is a reminder of the significance of this location, and it is our pledge for reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Acknowledging the erasure of Indigenous culture and the ongoing impact of this is something we are committed to learning about and working towards correcting.

The heart of the campus

The Library has always been at the heart of Carleton, not only as a place to access information but as a space for our community to gather and learn. As such, we recognize the need to be actively involved in the social changes taking place both on our campus and in society. In the pages that follow you will see how we plan on enhancing our resources and physical spaces and how we will be engaging with the communities that we serve.

In alignment with the Carleton's new Strategic Integrated Plan, we're excited to present our own Strategic Plan that will serve as the Library's guide in the years to come. In developing this plan, we've broadly considered how best to meet the goals and priorities of the University. We've investigated best practices in academic libraries both provincially and nationally. Most importantly, we've engaged in conversations with members of the Carleton community about their needs, hopes and wishes for the Library of the future. Our intention is to be inclusive, accessible, and focused on the needs of our users in all that we do.

We see our entire Library community featured in this plan and hope you can see yourself reflected in it too. We encourage you to look at the ideas outlined in this plan, to see where the paths the Library will be taking may converge with you own and provide an opportunity for us to work together in a partnership with purpose.

I am excited about what the future has to offer and confident that the Library’s strategic directions in the areas of student experience, knowledge sharing, active research, engagement with community and global partners, and operational excellence will support the University in new and innovative ways.

We will enhance Library space to support knowledge and sharing that is purposeful, creating a physical and online manifestation of knowledge on campus that is accessible for all.

We will build upon our role as global citizens and make actions that reflect our commitment to society.

We will strengthen Carleton Library’s connections and outreach to the community. We will explore new opportunities for collaboration with those external to the university in a focused way.

We will build on our past strengths and success in supporting and partnering in teaching and learning.

We will be active partners in the research mission of the university.

Our Passion

Carleton Library is a vibrant and active partner in teaching, learning, and research across all disciplines of the university. A centre of knowledge, interdisciplinarity, and community, the Library collects, disseminates, and generates information, serving the campus and beyond. The Library welcomes all faculty, students, and staff as well as the community; its staff are dedicated to understanding and meeting the needs of its users. The library building is a space for people, connections, and learning.
