Finding Bills and Statutes

When being asked to find a bill or statute, consider the following:

  • Jurisdiction - Is it federal or provincial? The Constitution Act, 1867 outlines the distribution of legislative powers in Canada (see sections 91 and 92).
  • Date - Do you know the approximate year the bill was tabled or the statute was approved?
  • Subject Matter - What is the bill or statute about?
  • Status - Did the bill become law? If yes, is the law in force?
  • History - Has the statute been amended or repealed?
