The following resource illustrates the various mapping agencies of the countries listed below as well as some of their mapping products/resources.


North America / South America


  • Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)
    • Index of the National Topographic System (NTS) of Canada (Google Earth)
      Index system used by Natural Resources Canada for providing general purpose topographic maps of the country. NTS maps are available in a variety of scales, the standard being 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 scales. Various geospatial products from the Government of Canada and private companies tend to distribute their data using the NTS Index.
    • CanMatrix - Georeferenced, Digital Topographic Maps of Canada & Print Ready Topos
      Digital raster files covering the Canadian landmass, generated from scans of topographic paper maps produced by Natural Resources Canada. They are available at scales of 1:50 000 and 1:250 000 (see index above), and they are tiled according to the NTS of Canada. These are geocoded and comply with the 1983 North American Datum reference system (NAD83).
    • Geological Maps (GEOSCAN)
      Search for hundreds of geological maps using the advanced search. For geology maps, specify the GSC A-Series maps (geology) or GSC Canadian Geoscience Maps
    • Geoscience Maps (NRCan): topics include bedrock geology, surficial materials, coal, environmental impacts, groundwater, hydrogeology, precious metals and more.

United States

  • United States Geological Survey (USGS)
    • US Topo Topographic Maps
      Produced by the National Geospatial Program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the project was launched in late 2009, and the term “US Topo” refers specifically to quadrangle topographic maps published in 2009 and later.
    • Historical Topographic Maps - Preserving the Past
      Historical Maps produced by USGS at a scale of 1:250,000 and larger. These maps were printed between 1884 and 2006.



United Kingdom

  • Ordnance Survey (OS) Maps
    Current United Kingdom topographic maps. These have a cost associated to them.

  • Historical Ordnance Survey Maps
    The National Library of Scotland hosts historical topographic maps of the United Kingdom at various scales and for various years. Users can view these maps online, but there is a cost to download the full resolution.

  • Ordnance survey mapping
    The British Library makes available some ordnance survey maps from their website. They also link to other organizations that have ordannce survey mapping.

  • Ordnance Survey of Ireland
    Interactive map viewer that allows users to view historic ordnance maps of Ireland. No direct downloading capabilities.


  • IGN web viewer
    Interactive map viewer from the Institut National de l’information Géographique et Forestière (IGN) that shows current topographic information of France.



  • Historical Topographic maps
    Interactive viewer of 200 years of topographic mapping of the Netherlands provided by the Netherlands' Cadastre, Land Registry and Mapping Agency (in short: Kadaster)
