Can I install ArcGIS Student Edition on departmental or lab computers?
If you require the ArcGIS Desktop software for departmental use or on lab computers, please have the faculty member or the lab coordinator contact gis@carleton.ca with the request specifying the number of computers and location.
Can I use my copy of ArcGIS Student Edition for doing practicum work if my practicum host site does not have the software?
Please contact gis@carleton.ca with the details of your practicum work to ensure that you remain within the terms of the ArcGIS Desktop license agreement.
How do I Install ArcGIS on a Mac (Apple) computer?
ArcGIS for Desktop is a windows based product and as such it is is not certified or supported on the Mac operating system. However, it is possible to run the program on your Mac. There are two options available to you, both of which requires that you have a properly licensed version of the Windows Operating System. The first option is to dual boot your Mac to Windows whenever you want to run the ArcGIS software. The Boot Camp (from Apple) allows you to run Microsoft Windows on your Mac. Secondly, you can use virtualization software such as Parallels or access the software using Carleton's Virtual Desktop software and our Library GIS virtual workstations. These two packages allow Intel-based Macs to run a full version of Windows and allows you to alternate between the Mac OS and the Windows OS. More information on using ArcGIS on a Mac can be found at the Esri website.
I am graduating soon, will my installed software still work?
The ArcGIS Desktop Student Edition software is valid for 365 days following the installation date of the software. If you graduate within that time period the software will to be authorized until the expiration date. After that you can request a copy of ArcGIS for Personal Use from Esri Canada for a fee.
Is there any available help on using the software?
You can take advantage of a number of free online courses that, offered through the Esri Training website, that are available to eligible students and faculty. We also deliver free GIS workshops through Grad Navigate in the Fall and Winter semesters. If neither of those options work for you, contact gis@carleton.ca with your questions.
