There are lots of different software packages that can create, edit, and process GIS data, and they vary from generalized GIS software to tools that specialize in specific data or processes. For the sake of simplicity, this guide will provide information on the software available from the library for Carleton students, staff, and faculty.
You can access all of these software packages on our Library GIS Workstations.
If you are having trouble deciding, we are happy to speak with you about the project you have in mind if you would like to know what the next steps should be. Email us at gis@carleton.ca or book a consultation.
I have a Mac
While some software packages listed below are only able to run on Windows, there are still some Mac options:
- QGIS and ArcGIS Online both work on Macs
- Use Boot Camp or a virtual environment (such as VirtualBox or VMWare Fusion) to run Windows on your Mac
- Use our Library GIS workstations remotely (Windows-based and have all the softwares listed on this page)
I have a Windows computer
Feel free to explore any of the software options below as they all work with Windows.
