MacOdrum Library Renovations: Update

On Wednesday, March 1, the main stairwell (Stairwell A) in MacOdrum Library will be completely closed from the first floor to the fifth until the end May 2017. Stairwell A is being closed for renovation and upgrading but the other stairwells will be available. During this work, there will be noise associated with this construction.

During the exam period, noise will be kept to a minimum.

Your patience and co-operation during this time is appreciated.

Update on available graduate student study spaces on the fifth floor

We wanted to provide an update on available graduate student study spaces on the fifth floor.

Due to the lack of use, rooms 570 to 574 have been converted to individual silent study areas which means keys will no longer work for these spaces. Rooms 504 to 511 remain graduate student study spaces.

In the near future rooms 570 to 574 will be converted to bookable group study rooms. We will provde updates when this work has been completed.

Renovation Work in MacOdrum Library

The next phase of renovations in MacOrdrum Library is expected to begin on Monday, February 6 and will continue until the end of June. The areas that will be included in this $1.5-million phase will be the third floor in the extension, washrooms, upgrades to the main staircase, and renovations on the first floor.

  • February 6: The third-floor extension will be closed for the day on February 6 as construction begins to add more student study space. This closure is to minimize disruption and for student safety. When the work is completed, there will be four new student study rooms and an additional 45 seats on the third floor in the extension.
  • February 6: Demolition begins on the first floor to begin construction on a new BIT IRM lab.
  • February 13: All washrooms located on floors one to three in the extension section of the library will be closed for renovations.

In the coming weeks, the main staircase (staircase A) in the library will be closed from floors one to five. Patrons will be directed to use other staircases within the building.

Students and other library users will experience noise during the renovations. Facilities Management and Planning appreciates your patience and co-operation as we complete these improvements to the library.

Library Road Book Return Slot Re-Opens

Now that exterior construction is completed, the book return slot that faces Library Road has re-opened. You can admire the new windows and wall while you drop your items off!

More Grad Study Room Spaces Available

The library's construction project is finished, all graduate student study rooms are open, and it turns out that we have a few more spaces than originally anticipated. So, we are reopening applications and will keep them open until all the spaces have been assigned.

Please register here and note that the only option available right now is "Desk in shared room." All carrels and lockers have been assigned.

Grad Study Room Update: All Rooms Open

Construction has finished on the grad study rooms on the canal side of the building. These rooms are now available for use.

If you've already been assigned a key, you can use it to enter these spaces. If you're still on the waiting list, keep an eye on your email next week. We'll be assigning more spaces mid-week and will be in touch.

Please note that we will not be re-opening applications for space, as there are still many more people on the waiting list than spaces available.

Library Road Book Return Slot Closed

Due to ongoing construction, the library road book return slot has been closed. The book return slots on the tunnel level and in the foyer will continue to be available. We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.

Repairs to Path and Tunnel to the Library Continue

Repair work continues on the pathway from Dunton Tower and in front of MacOdrum Library. Pedestrian access from the Quad to the library is available from the south side only (in front of Paterson Hall) during the construction period.

Scaffolding has been installed in the tunnel from Tunnel Junction to Dunton Tower, but the tunnel remains open for use.

The work on the path and the tunnel will continue until mid-August.

Since both exterior ramps leading to the library are closed while this work is being completed, the only accessible entrance into the library is via the tunnel. The ramps will reopen in July.

Facilities Management and Planning appreciates your patience and co-operation as we make these improvements to the campus.

Library Road Book Drop Closed Until April 30

Due to renovation work, the MacOdrum Library book drop located on Library Road will be closed until April 30.

In the meantime, please use the book drop located inside the library main doors or inside the tunnel.

Thank you for co-operation.

Library Tunnel Door and Dunton-Side Parking Unavailable

Due to our upcoming renovations, the exterior door to the tunnel by the library as well as the parking area between the library and Dunton Tower will be inaccessible from Monday, March 28* to Friday, Sept. 30. This area is being hoarded off and will be the staging area for the construction project. Para Transpo stop 11 will be impacted and we suggest that you use Para Transpo stop 12 located on Library Road in front of the Azrieli building.

During the construction period, Library Road will remain open as well as the sidewalk beside Dunton Tower and the tunnel access at Dunton Tower.  All other access points from that parking lot will be closed to the public.

If you need an accessible parking space in the Dunton Tower area, we would suggest either Parking Lot 1 (located behind the library) or Parking Lot 2 (located in front of the Architecture Building). There is also one accessible-designated parking spot on Library Road in front of Dunton Tower for visitors and permit holders.

The Starbucks in the library will remain open during the construction period although the seating area behind the coffee bar will be closed off and not available.

*Note: this date has been updated. A previous message said the area would be inaccessible as of Wednesday, March 23.

Next Phase of Library Renovations

We have a new phase of renovations starting March 17 and continuing into Fall 2016. This $4 million investment will focus on areas not touched by the last renovation project. Some of the priorities that students identified in past satisfaction surveys will be included in the renovations:

  • more student study space on the 3rd floor
  • updates to some of the washrooms within the library to make them more accessible

Another improvement is the replacement of the exterior wall on the north-east side of the building.

Students and other library users will experience noise and other disruptions during the renovations. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your co-operation. We will try to post timely alerts to our Twitter account about particular areas of disruption.

If you have any questions, please contact Val Critchley at val.critchley@carleton.ca.

Some books on 5th floor inaccessible

Books with call numbers between DS 556.8 N56 and DU 378 W4 will be inaccessible until the end of June because of work on the ventilation and cooling system in the library. Work is being carried out in the ceiling of the 5th floor where these books are shelved.

Library staff will be happy to retrieve books from this area.  Please call 613-520-2733, email 5thfloorbooks@library.carleton.ca or ask at the Library Services Desk on the main floor.

Construction Noise in Library

Work in the Library Garage this spring and summer involves jackhammers so will occasionally be quite noisy in the extension (back) of the building. The front of the building (facing the quad) is much quieter, but some of the floors can be warm. The front of the bottom floor and the main floor are the sweet spots for quiet and cooler temperatures.

Keep an eye here or on our Twitter account (@CarletonLibrary) for updates.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Noisy Library Friday, May 22

Work in the Library Garage today (Friday, May 22) involves jack hammers so it's very noisy in the building. If you're looking for a quiet space, you should probably look elsewhere today. There may be noise on other days as the work continues. Keep an eye here or on our Twitter account (@CarletonLibrary) for updates.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Ventilation in the Library

A major renovation of the ventilation and cooling system will be taking place in the old part of MacOdrum Library over the summer. This work will likely take until the middle of September.

On May 15, the building will be switched to the cooling mode, however, until then it's expected that the library will be quite warm.

The timing of this renovation work was chosen when it would have the least amount of impact on our clients. This is one of several renovations projects expected to occur over the upcoming months. Information will be provided to members of the Carleton community as details are confirmed.

We appreciate your patience and co-operation as we complete this important upgrade.

If you have questions, please contact Valerie Critchley, assistant University Librarian (Building and Operations), at valerie_critchley@carleton.ca.

Reference Collection move

As part of the Library Renovations, the Reference Collection will be moving into the MADGIC area.  This will make space for the construction of a new Instruction Centre, next to PageBreak, replacing room 102 on Floor 1.  This  new room will provide an excellent space for instruction and be made available as a computer lab and study space for students when not required for teaching. Completion is scheduled for August 2012.

For a map showing the new location of the Reference Collection, please refer to the Floor Maps page.

For more news on the ongoing renovations, please see the Renovations Category of the News Archive.

Renovations of Level 1

Today it all begins. The contractors are bringing material into Floor 1, and will start constructing a temporary wall to allow for the construction of a new space for the Maps, Data and Government Information Centre (MADGIC) and the creation of a splendid new reading room. The Library Copy Shop, compact shelving, Instruction Centre (room 102), and Library Support areas on that floor are still accessible. Expect some noise as the wall is built. In the weeks to come there will be more noise as the renovation continues.   Construction will usually take place from 7 am - 3 pm, Monday to Friday. This area is expected to start re-opening in summer 2012.

We appreciate your patience during this renovation period.

To complete the set up for the MacOdrum Library Expansion Project, it will be necessary to close the west tunnel door at the Library tunnel entrance.

The closure will take place Jan. 25 and will be in place for the duration of project, reopening in April 2013. Access and alternate exits are available through the tunnel /first level of Dunton Tower, the Quad at Azreili Pavilion and through the Azreili Pavilion from Library Road. Facilities Management and Planning appreciates your patience as we undertake this major construction project.

Construction for library expansion begins January 2012

The construction project for the MacOdrum Library begins this month!

The contractors have already installed their site hut in the parking lot between Dunton Tower and the library, near the canal.  We are moving out the last of the skids of shelving and chairs on the first floor to make room for the renovation of that space which is expected to start at the end of January.

The detailed construction schedule is being finalized, and we expect to give you detailed information shortly.

Repairs to compact shelving - November 8-10

Several units in the compact shelving on the first floor need to be repaired.  The work will take place from Tuesday, November 8 to Thursday, November 10.  At times, some books may be inaccessible for an hour or two.  Library staff will be on hand to help you get material as quickly as possible.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.

For further information, please contact the Welcome Desk.

Update on library expansion and renovations

We're getting ready for the coming expansion and renovations.  During construction the library will remain open, and its collections will be made available, during normal hours of operation.

In order to accommodate the changes in the floorplan that the expansion and renovations make necessary, we have to relocate some collections to the Storage Facility.

So far, from the first floor (in compact shelving) our full collection of theses, some law materials, and some government documents have already been moved. The first floor folios have been moved to the third floor.  On the second floor much of the reference collection in print has also been moved.  Many of these materials are available online and we can still retrieve them from Storage for you. Please check the catalogue for details on how to access them.

Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks about the impact on library space and services.

Funding approved for library renovations

Official press release from the Carleton Newsroom: Carleton Students to Benefit from Multimillion MacOdrum Library Project.

According to the plans, two floors will be added to the library extension and the entire façade will be replaced (see picture).  All told this will double the study space available to students, as well as create new facilities such as a digital media centre.

Stay tuned for information in the coming weeks about the impact on library space and services.
