Searching the Catalogue

Changes to Library services during the COVID-19 service disruption.

--> Use the keyword option in the Catalogue to execute advanced searches. The catalogue is more up-to-date than Summon about the status of books, and their due dates. It also provides access to all of your account functions such as renewals, holds, reading history, etc.

--> Example of search strategies using Boolean operators:

  • energy AND performance AND building* --> use AND to connect different topics
  • "blast effect" -- use quotation marks to ensure words are searched together as a phrase
  • "reinforced concrete" AND (tension OR behaviour) --> use OR to string synonyms within parentheses
  • pressuri*tion --> use the * asterisk for variant spellings of words: pressurisation/pressurization; or to truncate root words -->reinforc* will retrieve reinforce, reinforces, reinforced, reinforcing, reinforcement, etc.

--> Learn to recognize subject headings in book records (as shown below) that are related to your area of research and follow the subject links to other books on a similar topic. The subject headings comprise a controlled vocabulary that most North American academic libraries use so that books on the same subject can be found on the shelf near each other.
