Please note: The CURIE fund has broadened its terms of eligibility, allocations and procedures.
The Carleton University Research Impact Endeavour (CURIE) fund was initiated in 2011 as part of Carleton's overall strategy to support Open Access and Scholarly Publishing. The fund is intended to assist in the payment of article processing charges (APC) for open access articles authored by Carleton researchers. The terms of reference and procedures for the fund are reviewed annually to ensure that resources are being used as effectively as possible.
Important changes:
- The CURIE fund will now support Open Access publication in journals AND monographs
- Priority will be given to research with mandated open access requirements
- Allocations will occur monthly. Deadlines will normally be the end of each month.
- There will be a maximum allocation of $750.00 CDN per application (per article)
- There will be no more than 3 allocations per researcher per year, with preference given to first-time allocations.

Applications may be submitted upon final acceptance by the publisher. Applications will be reviewed monthly and applicants will be informed as soon as possible thereafter. It is expected that all applicants will deposit a copy of their articles to the Carleton University repository (CURVE) as well.

Who is Eligible?
Any Carleton University faculty, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students or professional staff who are named as author of a research article or monograph is eligible to apply for CURIE funding (the article must indicate the Carleton affiliation).
What is Eligible?
The work must be published in a recognized Open Access journal or conference proceedings or a similar Open Access vehicle. The work must be freely and globally available online immediately upon payment of the article processing fee, with minimal or limited copyright restrictions.
The work for which funding is requested must have undergone a formal review process (usually peer-reviewed).
Works accepted for publication within the last two years are eligible for this program.
NOTE: Journals or other Open Access vehicles will be evaluated based on DOAJ, OASPA, and COPE criteria. Publication in non-compliant outlets will not be funded.
Are there any limits on the fees?
Yes, there is a cap of $750 CDN per submission.
Who decides how the CURIE Fund is allocated?
The Fund is jointly administered by the Library and the Office of the Vice-President - Research and International (OVPRI).
Will the CURIE recipients be made public?
Yes, CURIE funded works will be made available through the institutional repository (CURVE).
Will the CURIE funds be made available permanently?
The program will be evaluated annually in relation to its contribution to Carleton's strategic, academic and research plans. Continuation of this initiative depends on the continued availability of base funding.
What are the application procedures?
Applicants should read all documentation, including the frequently asked questions, prior to completing the CURIE application form.
Applicants must provide a link on the form to the publisher's Open Access policies and to the fees schedule.
Applications may be made immediately upon final acceptance by the publisher.
