Each academic department appoints a representative to the library. Subject specialists in the library liaise with the appointed representative in their subject area(s) to ensure that the library collection and services support teaching and research at Carleton.

Collection Development

In cooperation with their subject specialist, library representatives help build the library collection by:

  • Forwarding requests from departmental colleagues to the subject specialist
  • Participating in special projects to ensure collections remain relevant to teaching and research needs
  • Assisting with revisions to collection policies and approval plans

Communication

  • Library representatives should notify the library of new courses or programs being proposed by the department
  • Subject specialists will keep library representatives informed of library policies and developments so that this information can be shared with other faculty
  • Subject specialists are available to attend departmental meetings to report on library initiatives and to discuss areas of mutual concern
